Base Salary: $65,166.40 - $90,542.40/Annually (salary does not include $.85 hourly stipend for all State Troopers)

Location: statewide

The Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Maine State Police, is looking for talented and hard-working individuals to fill multiple Maine State Trooper vacancies statewide. Applicants should have a strong desire to serve the citizens of Maine, while ensuring public safety through a combination of proactive community policing and criminal enforcement efforts.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Patrols an assigned geographic area in order to ensure compliance with state and local laws, identify, detect, effectively investigate criminal activity, and assist the public as needed.
  • Performs law enforcement functions for communities without police departments; attends community events in order to be visible and effectively collaborate on important issues within the community.
  • Issues warnings, makes arrests, establishes witnesses, collects and secures physical evidence and property seized, briefs prosecutor, documents cases in order to comply with elements of law.
  • Investigates complaints, observed incidents of law violations, and problems in order to enforce the law and protect the public.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with outside agencies including a wide range of medical and mental health professionals, critical infrastructure facilities, schools, and hospitals in order to coordinate and integrate law enforcement services within the community.
  • Manage and investigate crash scenes in order to assess emergency needs, administer first aid, safeguard the scene, prevent further injury or damage, determine contributing factors and violations of law.
  • Performs criminal investigations in assigned patrol area.
ABILITY TO LEARN AND RETAIN THE FOLLOWING:
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations applicable to and enforced by the Maine State Police.
  • Knowledge of State Police policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of general police methods.
  • Knowledge of community, regional, medical, and other agencies/resources.
  • Knowledge of computer technology, online communications platforms and social media.
  • Knowledge of ADA, social injustice issues, child abuse and domestic violence mandates, and civil rights issues.
  • Ability to employ a wide variety of law enforcement methods and techniques in resolving complex and sensitive criminal, civil, and social disputes.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to conduct investigations, interviews, and follow-up.
  • Ability to administer first aid.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including shift work and callouts.
  • Ability to apply incident command structures in an effort to maintain scene control.
  • Ability to effectively problem solve on the strategic and tactical levels.
  • Ability to control aggressive person(s).
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to write concise and detailed reports.
  • Ability to properly use and maintain State Police issued equipment.
  • Ability to quickly assess available facts and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to use and maintain firearms correctly.
  • Ability to work without immediate supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A valid driver's license
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A passing score on the Physical Fitness Test (40th percentile for non law-enforcement officers and 50th percentile for full-time, certified law enforcement officers)
  • Full-time, certified law enforcement officers need to attach a copy of their Academy certificate.
