Job Description:
This entry-level role involves studying the fundamental principles of plant biology and the impact of environmental conditions on plant growth.
The position requires familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field, and includes a variety of
tasks performed under general supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
Cultivate plants in controlled environment settings.
Support scientific research on maize pollen, speed breeding, and seed production.
Assist with plant breeding and nursery optimization activities, including prototype development and testing.
Collect field and greenhouse samples, conduct viability assays, perform pollinations, and maintain accurate records.
Operate greenhouse environmental control systems and perform routine maintenance (e.g., cleaning floors, organizing supplies).
Participate in team and project meetings, and communicate updates, changes, or issues promptly and clearly.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 1 3 years of related experience.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform repetitive movements such as bending.
Willingness to travel to field sites located 4 6 hours from Chesterfield, with approximately three overnight trips (3 4 days each) during the summer (June August).
Strong interest in greenhouse operations, plant propagation, and irrigation.
High attention to detail and effective task prioritization.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-project team environment.
Proficiency in basic math and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
