About the Role

This position offers a unique and challenging opportunity to serve as a key member of the electrical maintenance team at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). The successful candidate will hold a wide range of responsibilities related to the maintenance and operation of the airport’s electrical infrastructure including but not limited to aeronautical lighting and signage, low and medium voltage distribution, and various complex electrical systems. The candidate will play a critical role in the implementation of a comprehensive electrical maintenance program while ensuring that all activities align with the Port Authority’s priorities and operational standards. The idea candidate should have strong leadership skills, a commitment to operational excellence, and be comfortable navigating ambiguity in a dynamic and fast paced environment.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Electrical Chief Maintenance Supervisor, the selected individual will be responsible for supervising the activities of skilled mechanics in the maintenance and repair of electrical systems at John F. Kennedy International Airport. While core responsibilities are centered around supervision of electricians performing maintenance and repair of aeronautical lighting, signage, and equipment, the successful candidate is expected to participate in a dynamic and comprehensive electrical maintenance program. As the program is further developed, responsibilities may rotate or be adjusted to align with emerging needs or priorities within the electrical maintenance program. Those maintenance needs may include roadway and parking lot lighting, emergency and standby power systems, and power distribution equipment.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for updating and maintaining maintenance records using Maximo and other tools. Additionally, the successful candidate may be required to respond to and coordinate corrective efforts supporting facility electrical emergencies and issues. The candidate may also be required to provide support for facility construction projects, primarily related to the airfield.

Major Responsibilities Include

  • Administering and supervising airfield electrical maintenance routines to maintain compliance with FAA FAR 139 certifications.
  • Performing airfield inspections and walkthroughs.
  • Participating in the unit’s electrical safety program.
  • Participating in project scoping, design, and construction meetings.
  • Review and comment on contract drawings and facility alterations and evaluate them for their impact on the operation and maintenance systems.
  • Attending interim and final inspections.
  • Planning, initiating, and directing the instruction of assigned personnel in work methods and techniques, safe work practices, and use of materials and equipment.
  • Developing and analyzing maintenance functions to ensure the most efficient utilization of workforce and equipment.
  • Supporting and updating the unit’s roster or routines as approved by the Unit Chief.
  • Performing audits on materials, equipment, inventoried spare parts, etc.
  • Providing ongoing support for facility construction projects.
  • Attending meetings with multiple disciplines at all staff levels.
  • Reading, reviewing, and working from contract drawings (blueprints) and contract specifications, and making comments/recommendations regarding maintenance aspects of proposed new construction or alterations.
  • Supervising the work of subordinates and training new employees.
  • The successful candidate must be able to effectively plan, schedule, and control maintenance projects and routines.
  • The successful candidate must be able to respond to declared emergencies, including snow conditions, and work on an overtime basis as a regular function of the job.

Additional Information

This position is a permanent position, assigned to Unit 6 67 (JFK Electrical Maintenance) to support the facility’s comprehensive electrical maintenance program . It is located at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in Jamaica, NY.

This position is primarily on the A -Tour ( 2200 x 0600 , Sunday-Thursday ) but may require work at other times and shifts, on an as-needed basis.

The successful candidate must be able to pass a fingerprint-based Criminal History Check as mandated by 49CFR 1542 and will be required to obtain and maintain an Airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) ID card with DR-2 Airfield Driving and escort privileges.

The successful candidate will be required to participate in the airport snow removal program, must be able to respond to declared emergencies, including snow conditions, and work on an overtime basis as a regular function of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have ten (10) years electrical maintenance experience including five (5) years at or above the journey level or equivalent, and at least two (2) years at the foreman or supervisory level or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • The successful candidate must be available to respond to declared emergencies and must be able to work on an overtime basis as a regular function of the job
  • Candidates that do not demonstrate the minimum qualifications on their resume cannot be considered.

Desired Qualifications

  • Comprehensive experience in the construction and/or maintenance of complex utility or industrial electrical distribution systems
  • Comprehensive experience in the operation and maintenance motors and motor control centers
  • Comprehensive experience in the operation and maintenance of low and medium voltage circuit breakers and substations up to 27kV
  • Comprehensive experience in the operation and maintenance fixed and portable generating equipment
  • Comprehensive experience in the operation and maintenance aeronautical lighting systems and equipment
  • Comprehensive experience in the operation and maintenance roadway lighting systems and signalized intersections
  • Comprehensive experience in the operation and maintenance of FPLS systems
  • Demonstrated experience with the use of personal computers, including the Microsoft Office suite of tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.), Google Earth, Microsoft Access, and Visio.
  • Familiarity with FAA FAR-139, and the guidance and intent of FAA AC-150/5340-26C, “Recommended Guidelines for Maintenance of Airport Visual Aid Facilities”.
  • Knowledgeable of the National Electrical Code.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects involving the construction , building, or maintenance trades.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing process improvement changes in facility environments.
  • Thorough knowledge of asset management systems such as IBM MAXIMO .
  • Experience managing staff in a unionized environment .
  • Must have demonstrated written, oral, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with various levels of Port Authority staff and Federal Agencies, as well as external contractors, tenants, and customers.
  • Strong knowledge of airport terminal , landside, and aeronautical operations.
