GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This is a semi-skilled administrative position responsible for providing clerical assistance and service support for a public library system.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The following statements describe the principal functions of the job and its scope of responsibility but should not be considered an all-inclusive list of work requirements.  Individuals may perform other duties as assigned.

• Sorts and shelves books and other items according to pre-established classifications and codes.

• Issues and receives library materials such as books, films, audio-visual devices, records and tapes.

• Records information identifying data and due dates either by hand or other automated equipment in order to accurately issue and expect return of materials.

• Operates and uses various computer systems and programs associated with library functions.

• Inspects returned books and material for damage.

• Verifies due-date and computes, receives and records overdue fines.

• Assumes responsibility for the operation of the library in the Librarian or Library Assistant II's absence.

• Performs payment transactions.

• Responds productively to change and performs all other related tasks as required and as directed.

• Assumes responsibility for library display designs.

• Provides feedback to Library Assistant II and/or supervisor.

• Promotes library services and programs.

• Assists with writing Library Lines articles, as needed.

• Maintains a professional and safe unit and work area adhering to established safety policies and the image desired for the organization.

• Consistently follows Board policies and procedures.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library procedures.

• Knowledge of work methods and techniques related to public service work.

• Knowledge of methods required to locate research material.

• Ability to work in harmony with staff and the general public.

• Ability to file library material. Basic ability to use computers in library work.

• Ability to communicate accurately and clearly, both in writing and orally.

• Ability to enforce library rules and regulations to protect public safety.

• Ability to function independently of direct supervision when required.

• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, supervisors, directors, elected officials, vendors, and the general public.

PHYSICAL SKILLS:

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 25% of the time. Must be able to inspect and assess daily email and postal mail correspondence. Frequently operates various types of office equipment to include, but not limited to a computer and copy machine. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs. The individual in this position frequently communicates with the public, vendors and co-workers. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Frequently moves materials and office equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. Constantly works in an indoor environment. Rarely works in inclement outdoor weather conditions. Rarely operates motor vehicle for up to (4) hours continuously or intermittently. Must be able to frequently position self to reach files and other office items located on high and low shelves or the floor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalence diploma. One-year experience in the public library system or customer service either in a paid or volunteer status. Basic familiarity with computer keyboarding required.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver License. 

OTHER JOB-RELATED REQUIREMENTS:
