We publish award-winning newspapers, lifestyle magazines, community publications and custom publications, and our content appears in print, online and across numerous social media channels. We also produce community events in multiple cities throughout Ohio.

The Opportunity

This role is the cornerstone of our advertising success, focusing primarily on the design and production of effective ads for our diverse clientele and internal brands. The ideal candidate has a strong portfolio in advertising and visual communication and thrives in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines. As you grow in this position, you will have the opportunity to transition to designing your own award-winning publications, working alongside our senior editorial and design staff to shape the look and feel of our newspapers and magazines.

Key Responsibilities

Advertising Design (Primary Focus)

  • Design and produce a high volume of impactful print and digital advertisements for various clients, ensuring all designs align with the client’s brand standards and our internal aesthetic guidelines.
  • Work closely with the sales and production teams to manage ad deadlines, specifications, and revisions efficiently.
  • Prepare final press-ready files and digital assets for publishing across multiple channels, strictly adhering to technical specifications.
  • Develop internal marketing materials, promotions, and house ads as needed.

Creative and Production Support

  • Maintain and organize the digital asset library, including logos, images, and final design files.
  • Assist the Senior Design team with layout, image sourcing, and production tasks for current publications.
  • Stay current with industry trends, design software updates, and new advertising technologies

Publication Growth (Future Opportunity)

  • As expertise and capacity allow, take ownership of the full design and layout for assigned publications
  • Collaborate with clients to conceptualize and execute visually compelling layouts that enhance the editorial narrative.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or a related field or equivalent practical experience.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Professional experience in graphic design, preferably within a publishing or agency environment.
  • Expert proficiency in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. InDesign mastery is a must.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional skills in advertising design, layout, typography, and visual hierarchy.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent understanding of print production processes (CMYK, resolution, bleed, file prep) and digital media best practices.
  • Strong communication skills, a team-player attitude, and a keen attention to detail.

If you feel strongly that you could contribute to our team, and thrive in a fun, fast-paced, deadline-driven, family first atmosphere, we encourage you to submit your cover letter, resume and portfolio to jobs@cjn.org. Please reference “Graphic Designer” in the subject line
